Swallowtails is just 3Km from Carhaix, ancient crossroads of Western Brittany. It has a street market, tourist office, restaurants and supermarkets. For cyclists and walkers there are many easy cycle paths exploring the countryside along former railway lines and the lovely Nantes-Brest canal towpaths. There is an excellent swimming complex, riding, golf, a tree top adventure park, tennis, canoeing and kayaking, karting, bowling and good fishing. You can visit the Coreff brewery, the Roman aqueduct or the Glenmore Theatre, the Vieilles Charrues rock festival or the Bagadans folk festival. Maybe take a steam train to Paimpol? We are superbly placed for touring Western Brittany by car. The Monts D’Arree, Montagnes Noires, Aulne Valley, Huelgoat Forest and Corong Gorges are all within easy reach. Woods, springs, chapels, manoirs and megaliths are everywhere to be found in this ancient land. Three contrasting coasts are one hour away – cliff-top walks, tiny harbours, sandy beaches.

Swallowtails – English: The open ground floor boasts massive oak beams and lime-washed stone walls. To the right of the studded oak door you will find a traditional Breton granite fireplace with wood burning stove in a cosy sitting area with French windows opening to the garden. To the left the kitchen and dining area, in 1930s style, is well-equipped with cookware and tableware, gas cooker, refrigerator, microwave oven and double sink. A central staircase leads to an airy upstairs landing and one double bedroom and one twin bedroom, both with oak beams, furnished with modern beds and comfortable mattresses, bedside lights, mirrors, hanging space and drawers. Duvets, English style pillows and matching bed linen are provided (although no bedding is provided for the travel cot). Shower room with toilet and washbasin, towels and mat provided. There are electric radiators throughout the property.
Garden & surroundings: Outside, to the rear and within the one acre garden, is a separate garden area of around 150 square metres for your exclusive use, with grassed area, patio with picnic table and gas barbecue overlooking landscaped pond. There is plenty of off road parking for your car. In summer, you will soon realise why the house is named ‘Swallowtails’. The courtyard is busy with swallows who have nested here for years and many other birds. You may also be lucky enough to see the barn owl who is your next door neighbour! We are surrounded by working farmland offering short walks. The River Hyeres is just two minutes away down a farm track – and you are on the border of Finistere. Also within walking distance are the relais routier at Sainte Catherine and the friendly bar at Treffrin. A third bar and relais doubles as village shop – ideal for your breakfast bread or croissants.
Your hosts – Ann & Rex: We bought the manor in 2001 and have lived here permanently since 2002. We grow all our own vegetables and fruit and you may well find a gift of seasonal produce left on your front doorstep to tempt you. We are passionate about Brittany, very involved in it’s dance, it’s music and its traditions, so you can be sure of an enthusiastic welcome. As we work here, we will be too busy to get under your feet, but will be on hand if needed. Matignon (St. Potan) is the perfect holiday spot to get to know Brittany. You can go on trips from this centrally located starting point to the most important places of interest in the region. Granite coast, Cap Fréhel, St.Malo, Mt. Saint-Michel, the medieval and artistic city of Dinan, the tidal power plant on the Rance between Dinard and St. Malo, the oyster and clam city of Cancale. All kinds of water sports and beach activities can be found on nearby fine sandy beach coves on the granite coast. There is an exclusive casino on the grandiose beach in Sables-d’Or les-Pins and St. Cast is fascinating with its 7 beautiful family beaches and demanding 18-hole golf course. Hikers also have a great time in this area. They can walk along the old toll keepers path that offers a breath-taking panorama of the coast between St. Malo, Fort La-Latte and Cap Fréhel.
